Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas (Special Edition) (1997)

Available Formats:
DVD, VHS, and Spanish VHS

The enchantment of Disney's Academy Award®-winning film Beauty and the Beast continues as Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas (Special Edition) happily casts its song-filled spell. This irresistible tale that "recaptures the magic and charm of the original" (Neil Rosen, New York 1) reveals a Christmas past when Belle does her best to warm the Beast's castle with the spirit and hope of the season -- despite the Beast's disdain of the holidays. Belle asks the castle's Enchanted Objects to join the celebration, including stubborn Angelique -- a delicate tree ornament who was once the castle decorator. But can Belle, Cogsworth, Lumiere, and their friends undo the plans of Forte, the pompous pipe organ who hates happy celebrations and tries to keep the Beast apart from Belle's special holiday gift? Newly remastered for sparkling sights and sound, and reuniting everybody's favorite voice cast from the original feature, Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas (Special Edition) overflows with five spectacular songs, spellbinding visuals, and the same delightful charms that brought Disney's original masterpiece to the screen. It's a holiday treat you'll find your entire family watching over and over again -- not just for Christmas, but any time of year!

Product Description from Manufacturer

Obviously the Disney suits gave more than two figs about the legacy from the first Beast film, as they reassembled the former cast and spent some cash on production and tune-smithing for this straight-to-video effort. The events unfold between the time in the first film where Belle bartered herself to the Beast and her later return to the village to save her father. So the Beast's heart still hasn't been melted yet, and he's susceptible to the inky persuasions of Forte (Tim Curry), a malevolent pipe organ (and former music teacher to the prince). Belle is still trying to win over the Beast and decides that bringing Christmas to the castle will be the way to do it. Please control that gag reflex for this does work remarkably well, and though entirely unnecessary and certainly not a complement to the original, it doesn't tarnish its good name.

Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas

Format: DVD or VHS
Donald Duck's nephews learn why holidays come once a year, Goofy and son discover the spirit of Santa, and Mickey and Minnie reenact a classic tale of giving in this all-new holiday offering. Kelsey Grammer (TV's Frasier) narrates as Donald hosts Christmas at his house, complete with an egg and pancake breakfast, a sled for each duckling in the closet, and Daisy under the mistletoe. But the celebration gets old fast when the boys' wish for Christmas every day comes true. Next up, Goofy's son wonders whether there is a Santa after the villainous Pete tells him there's not and he catches Dad impersonating the portly gift-giver. Goofy demonstrates the spirit of giving by taking a meal and presents to less-fortunate neighbors, and many Goofy-style mishaps later, father and son have a surprise visitor. In the third story, the mouse lovebirds give an updated spin to O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi," with Minnie having the heirloom watch with no chain and Mickey a harmonica with no case. This trio of Christmas stories adds up to an hour of heartfelt fun, capped off by the gang singing "Jingle Bells." Perfect holiday cheer for those 4 and up.

Winnie the Pooh - A Very Merry Pooh Year

Format: DVD, VHS, or Spanish VHS
Pooh Bear and his pals in the Hundred Acre Wood celebrate Christmas and New Year's Eve in a pair of adventures folded into this 65-minute made-for-video feature. In the first, the silly old bear plays Saint Nick to his buddies ("I always thought he'd be taller") after failing to get an errant wish list off to Santa, while identity crisis strikes the gang in the second half. Piglet inherits Tigger's hop and jumps like a pogo stick, and Eeyore (dressed in Pooh's shirt) becomes a happy-go-lucky honey lover. Welcome to The Twilight Zone according to Winnie the Pooh. There's not much A.A. Milne in this TV-style holiday special, but it's a bouncy little production that should entertain the wee ones with its warm fuzzies, good company, slapstick energy, and life lessons.

Description from Amazon.com

Winnie the Pooh - Seasons of Giving

Format: DVD or VHS
Three marvelous cold-weather stories from Disney's popular Pooh television series are combined into one video. A slight error in judgment has led the gang in the 100 Acre Wood into spring in "Groundpiglet Day." Rabbit's rushing about defeats the true purpose of the holidays in "A Winnie the Pooh Thanksgiving." Rabbit is also the center of "Find Her, Keep Her" when he adopts a wayward bird. Even though this is a new collection of cartoons, the 70-minute tape keeps closely to the spirit of the '60s Pooh classics (unlike previous Pooh cartoons). A new song from Disney songmasters the Sherman brothers is sung (along with their famous title number), and Paul Winchell returns as the unmistakable voice of Tigger. That's not the late Sterling Holloway voicing Pooh, but a remarkable impersonation by ace mimic Jim Cummings.

Disney's Sing Along Songs - Very Merry Christmas Songs

Format: DVD or VHS
Get ready to celebrate this warm and wonderful time of year and sing along with the Christmas carols you love best! Plus, join in a jolly chorus of new holiday sing alongs -- featuring your favorite Disney characters! Learning the lyrics is easy and fun because the words appear right on the screen. Whether you're having a party, starting a brand-new family tradition, or simply getting into the Yuletide spirit, Disney's Very Merry Christmas Sing-Along Songs brings the gift of music and laughter home for the holidays!

Description from Manufacturer

While most of Disney's Sing-Along titles are compilations of theme songs from movies, here is a musical collection presented for the sole purpose of celebrating Christmas. The holiday video oozes with merriment as it blends traditional carols and seasonal favorites with Disney's unique brand of quality animation and beloved characters. Mickey Mouse opens the 30-minute program with an original song, "From All of Us to All of You," while Chip and Dale scamper around the Christmas tree. "Deck the Halls" will never sound the same after hearing Donald Duck's rendition, and even Santa gets in on the animated action as he plunges down the chimney in "Up on the Housetop." As a reverent reminder of the Christ-child's birth, Disneyland Children's Sing-Along Chorus harmonizes "Silent Night" and "Joy to the World." Especially captivating is this latter tune, accompanied by hundreds of animated fairies dancing through a snow-covered forest before they transform into glistening stars. Lest we forget this is Disney, all 13 songs add cameo appearances by favorite characters Jiminy Cricket, Bambi, Minnie, and many more. Nostalgia reigns as Bing Crosby lilts "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" while plenty of snowy shenanigans from Mickey and Goofy remind viewers why Disney characters are so endearing. If Disney is tooting its own horn (and it does through a couple minutes of live-action footage from Disneyland's Magic Kingdom), it is discreet. The real star of this sing along is the spirit of Christmas, alive in full measure.

The Santa Clause (1994)

Available Formats:
DVD and VHS

Divorced toy company executive Scott Calvin (Tim Allen of Home Improvement and the Toy Story movies) is pleased to have his son Charlie for Christmas, though the boy himself isn't happy about it. But when Santa Claus accidentally topples off the roof of the house and falls with a thud in the snow, Scott finds himself taking the merry old elf's place and earning new respect in his son's eyes. When the night ends, the reindeer take them to the north pole, and Scott discovers that by donning the fabled red suit, he's inadvertently agreed to become the next Santa Claus. The next morning he wakes up in his own bed and thinks it's all a dream--only Charlie remembers it with crystal clarity. Scott now has to deal with his suspicious ex-wife (Wendy Crewson, Air Force One) and her psychiatrist boyfriend (Judge Reinhold, Beverly Hills Cop), who both think he's playing tricks with Charlie's mind, and also with his own out-of-control body, which is putting on weight and growing a prodigious beard. The Santa Clause probably won't supplant It's a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street as anyone's favorite holiday film, but it's an enjoyable, straightforward family film, anchored by the affable charisma of Allen.

The Santa Clause 2 : The Mrs. Clause (2002)

Available Formats:
DVD and VHS

Walt Disney Pictures presents an all-new comedy adventure overflowing with holiday cheer. Tim Allen reappears in The Santa Clause 2, the hilarious sequel to everybody's holiday favorite. Scott Calvin (Allen) has been Santa Claus for the past eight years, and his loyal elves consider him the best one ever. But Scott's got problems. His son Charlie has landed on this year's "naughty" list, and if Scott doesn’t marry by Christmas Eve -- one very, very short month away -- he'll stop being Santa forever. Embracing Christmas and the magic of family with heart, warmth, fun, and charm, The Santa Clause 2 is classic holiday entertainment everybody will enjoy again and again.

Product Description from Manufacturer

Considering how lame this sequel could have been, The Santa Clause 2 makes for a pleasant holiday diversion. It's got the familiar smell of Disney marketeering, and more than a few parents will object to this further embellishment of the St. Nick legend, but Tim Allen's amiable presence provides ample compensation. As a divorced dad who inherited the jolly man's job in The Santa Clause, Allen now faces another Yuletide challenge. According to the "Missus Clause" in his North Pole contract, he can't continue to be the real Santa until he gets married. As luck and five credited screenwriters would have it, Allen falls for the Scrooge-y principal (Elizabeth Mitchell) of his son's school, while a phony, power-hungry duplicate Santa wreaks havoc on the North Pole's overworked elves. It's all as sweet as spiced eggnog, with that warmed-over feel of a mandated sequel, but the Christmas spirit does prevail with the sound of sleigh bells and Allen's rosy-cheeked ho, ho, ho!

Eloise at Christmastime

Format: DVD or VHS
It's tinsel and holly and "fa la la lolly" when Eloise lends her unique brand of holiday spirit to this made-for-television movie inspired by Kay Thompson's book of the same name. Sofia Vassilieva shines as ruckus-raising Eloise, who can simultaneously exasperate and exhilarate the genteel staff of New York's Plaza hotel. In the days before Christmas, Eloise learns that Rachel (Sara Topham), the daughter of Plaza owner Mr. Peabody, is returning after a long absence to marry mystery man Brooks Oliver. Eloise insists on helping with the Yuletide nuptials while plotting a matchmaking scheme of her own--to find true love for her best pal Bill (Gavin Creel), a free-spirited hotel waiter. Meanwhile, Eloise keeps busy sprinkling holiday mirth on everyone, including her beloved Nanny, played "rawther" marvelously by Julie Andrews. Whereas Eloise at the Plaza portrays the precocious 6-year-old as mostly mischievous, this film showcases her compassionate side which, together with the strong ensemble cast, offers plenty of Christmas cheer. Watch for the sizzling chemistry and musical talents of Topham and Creel.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

Format: DVD or VHS
Brian Henson directs his late father's creations in the Charles Dickens classic, the best known (and most oft-filmed) Christmas story of all time. Michael Caine plays the old miser Scrooge with Kermit as his long-suffering but ever-hopeful employee Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Cratchit's wife, and a host of Muppets (including the Great Gonzo as an unlikely Charles Dickens) taking other primary roles in this bright, playful adaptation of the somber tale. Or at least it starts brightly enough--the anarchic humor soon settles into mirthful memories and a sense of melancholy as the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future take Scrooge on a journey of his lonely, wasted life. Michael Caine makes a wonderful Scrooge, delightfully rediscovering the meaning of life as fantastic creations from Henson's Creature Shop (developed specially for this film) take the reins as the three ghosts. While the odd mix of offbeat humor and somber drama undercuts the power of Dickens's drama, this kid-friendly retelling makes an excellent family drama that adults and children alike can enjoy.

A Muppet Family Christmas

Format: DVD or VHS
A warm Yuletide special, A Muppet Family Christmas pairs the Muppet gang with the perennial favorite Sesame Street cast for a holiday celebration. With a blizzard brewing outside, Fozzie's childhood farmhouse on Christmas Eve becomes the backdrop for a medley of holiday tunes--eight in all--ranging from the Muppet band's rousing "Jingle Bell Rock" to Big Bird's sweet rendition of "The Christmas Song." Though the script meanders in part, the 42-minute program shines as a musical revue, seasoned with quick-witted interludes by the culinary comedic Swedish Chef, slapstick odd couple Ernie and Bert, and the diva-like escapades of Miss Piggy. While lacking the irresistible sizzle of The Muppet Movie, the show's finale, which includes Kermit and Piggy under the mistletoe and a cameo appearance by Jim Henson, proves that nothing can dim the Muppets' appeal.

Mickey's Christmas Carol

(1997 Release)

Format: VHS
Despite being released in 1983 this lovely little animated Christmas story has the real mark of the late great Walt Disney on it. It has a slightly old fashioned look about it which is just right and harks back to all the outstanding work done at the Disney Studios during its golden age under Walt Disney.

"Mickey's Christmas Carol" tells pure and simple the story of Charles Dickens immortal tale "A Christmas Carol" with all the well known Disney characters being superbly cast in the main roles of the story. Despite there being countless versions of this classic story this adaption is excellent and ideal family entertainment. Scrooge McDuck, always one of my favourite Disney characters takes centre stage here as , you guessed it Ebenezer Scrooge. As befitting to Scrooge his character starts out as mean, uncaring, and cold before the necessary reformation at the conclusion. His voice is provided by Disney veteran Alan Young. Mickey Mouse plays the sympathetic role of the down trodden Bob Cratchit and Goofy makes a most memorable, accident prone Jacob Marley, Scrooge's former coworker. Playing the three spirits who make the visit to Scrooge on Christmas Eve are Willie the Giant, Jiminy Cricket and Pete.

The beautiful animation for the Christmas settings is unsurpassed with the snow covered town, gaslighted streets, Christmas Decorations and Victorian costumes of the characters and it just seems that the well known personalities of the various animated characters match perfectly with their Dicken's counterparts. I'm frankly surprised that this wonderful story had never been adapted by Walt Disney before, what with all the potential that it holds.

As an alternative to all the live action versions of this great classic story I feel "Mickey's Christmas Carol" is an excellent effort and still manages to get across the essential message that Charles Dickens was trying to make about forgiveness and love for one another. Put aside the thirty or so minutes this story takes to tell and it will definately instill the Christmas spirit in you. As a lover of fine animation with lovable characters, it's a particular favourite of mine and I hope you too will find a place for it in your home.

A poor young boy braves the big city to sell the family donkey, Small One. But there doesn't seem to be anyone who can offer a warm home and tender care to the beloved beast and the boy becomes thoroughly disheartened. When a gentle stranger appears, in need of a very special animal for a very special journey, a bright stars shines reassuringly in the December sky. The Small One is an animated Christmas treasure and a touching, inspiring tale for all ages!

Product Description from Manufacturer

This is a wonderful short story from Disney that gives a new perspective to the Nativity story - from the viewpoint of the little donkey that carried Mary to Bethlehem, and the boy who owned him. The songs are lovely to listen to, especially 'Small One' and 'Friendly Face'. There is a charm and warmth in this tale that I find is lacking in many of the animations that Disney are producing of late.
